Not necessarily. At DFW, AA offers ITI (international-to-international) through-checking of bags for itineraries that start in a foreign country and end in a foreign country with merely a connection.
If the check-in agent at CUN places the special ITI tag on the bag, the OP should not see it again until arrival at HEL.
