When I was based near EWR, in, yes, 2007, it was like this as well. When I was scheduled to fly EWR-ORD-CVG (pre-merger), I probably got re-routed on the nonstop LGA-DAY on US like half the time because I was going to misconnect due to ATC delayed. I also remember once being like 100 for take off (wish I was exagurating..if so, it’s really n not by much) and taking 2 hours to take off due to delays - something like a gust of wind at any point in the afternoon could drive evening delays (with all the intl departures) to 2 + hour tarmac waits.

Definitely not missing EWR as my local airport.
