Self service machines are usually not airline-specific though and tend to be shared with other airlines handled by the same handling company. I'm not familiar with the MAD situation but there are many airports where using self service bag drop is indeed a way to get around having to wait for the counter to open. But, they still won't be open in the middle of the night unless some airline using the same self service bag drop has a flight at that time.
