I stayed in a renovated room, no upgrade.

The bed is significantly less comfortable than the Fairfield's bed
Shower temperature is inconsistent, a surprise jet of cold water is not uncommon
The hair dryer is an old timey attached to the bathroom wall unit type
The desk is nice, the chair is not: presumably they bulk ordered the chairs before checking that they fit under the desks...
The WiFi is okay most of the time but daily reconnection is required and intermittent disconnects occur (and slowness, too)

And for the things that are fine/good:

Room temperature gets down to around 19c with the air conditioning running
The view from rooms is better than the Fairfield: a river and highway
A little less noisy than the Fairfield but has the same highway noise and added train noise (which sounds like a plane, for some reason)
The windows open wide enough to climb out
The lounge is okay, it is just a section of the lobby
At times in the lobby it felt like the hotel has more staff than guests; all of the staff are polite and helpful
Laundry service is very cheap

If you need the most hotel for your money, the AC Hotel beats the Fairfield by virtue of having one more star. If you need the most value for your money, the Fairfield is much better value. The AC Hotel made me appreciate the Fairfield more.

Next stop is a week at Courtyard Kuala Lumpur South.
It's scary to see that you prefer FFI than the AC - it means that AC must be really bad.

CY KL South is another price point though - more in the RM 3XX range.
