Not sure if this is best elsewhere or here but have a complex situation I'd appreciate some insight on.
Is it even an IRROPS if the reason you can't fly is because the airline kept failing to allow reasonable efforts to check in? It seems you can't check in online with MH xONEx segments -- in any case I couldn't for an MH segment with no connections. You also can't check in by phone.
I have an AA issued DONE and was unable to check in at the airport for an MH (metal and flight number) flight despite being in time to do so. The issue was unusual (*) with MH initially unwilling to take responsibility. That may have changed but alas MH insist only AA can sort things out because it's an AA ticket. Having to go to the AA RTW desk to sort an at airport issues seems mad but less so given I was never checked in? Even so... odd if an airline can avoid all responsibility by simply rejecting every reasonable effort for a passenger to check in.
*: at the airport I found no MH staff. It was 80 mins before a (day before) revised departure time and I thought they'd closed early. For about the next hour I hunted for the MH airline office and spent much of that time on the phone with a sympathetic MH agent. I got nowhere until the phone agent asked the info desk (via my phone) to call the gate -- at that point the plane still wasn't boarding (I later learned it left over 1hr later).
I heard he gate supervisor ask for confirmation the check in counters were open until 1hr before scheduled departure and after that he refused to help. I politely but repeatedly asked to be allowed to try and make the gate (and I'd be fine if they left without me if I'd tried) so a few minutes later the agent just hung up. I appreciate they were running late already and helping a business class passenger they incorrectly but reasonably throught has missed the check in time isn't helpful for them.
After the flight took off, I eventually found the rather hidden MH airport office and after more polite sorry can't do anythings (as the check in didn't close early so it was a no show) we eventually worked out that the check in counters had been moved without the information boards being updated. So my sin was to turn up in time but where the boards said rather where MH were. The staff member was then willing to put me up in a poor nearby hotel and wish me luck getting AA to put me on the next day flight. I noted it was D2 but may not stay like that and he just shrugged. Then shortly after... J0 and same the day after. I'm potentially stranded with MH unwilling to deal with it as an IRROP and AA I am going to assume of the same view. (I rang reservations who couldn't help and am waiting for the RTW desk to open shortly).
TBH I can't easily see a way out of this except ripping up my travel plans with a new ticket (a reroute isn't really an option)
