If you book through BA, you can have different name spelling on the ticket and different in your APIs - Advance Pax Information. API has to match what your passport says. I always book my flights with my first name only, but provide the full name with the passport details. Your partner's visa has to match their passport details.
It will probably be ticketed through AA, although the fares don’t seem that much different anyhow. The visa will be FNU/name as I’ve already read up the guidance from the US Embassy. Forgot about difference between the name on the booking and the API info too. This might seem a lot less stressful than I first though.
