I tried the Yamazaki Smokey recently. Good, but perhaps not worth the ¥18,000.
The Hakushu has higher ratings as far as reviewers online go.

Suntory Royal I like, but it is a ¥3,500 whiskey and not hard to find at most Japanese liquor shops. Paying double that for a fancier bottle at duty-free is crazy, though gift-buyers with EUR/USD/AUD may consider it appealing enough to be worth it.
