Please post your IHG Rewards Experiences 2024

Holiday Inn – the niu Seven Düsseldorf Ost (Gerresheim)

What is your Priority Club status?
Ambassador Diamond

Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
In general yes.

I only needed a room for a night. Major criteria for this hotel was the least expensive room rates of all IHG hotels, the good connection to public transportation and the A3 motorway. The hotel is not very old.

The area around the hotels is residential and a free space. There are not much to see in the proximity to the hotel, though Gerresheim as a kind of city centre with shops. The old town is a 25 minutes tram / subway ride (U73) and a two stop S-Bahn ride to main station.

The hotel has four floors with the top floor having only rooms on one side.

The check-in desks are opposite the entrance. Two desks are available to check-in guest, and both were staffed on this Saturday afternoon, though one agent was at the phone. There was no waiting time as I was the only guest. The reservation was retrieved from the system and like in other “the niu” hotels the information for IHG members were prepared in advance. The agent thanked me for being IHG One Rewards Diamond Member. I was asked about my choice of amaneity. Points, snack or drink were offered, but not breakfast. There was a slight confusion about the breakfast, as the homepage mentioned breakfast as being included, which was not the case and is an error on the homepage. I went with the points anyway, but have had to ask for breakfast as amenity myself.

Not the first hotel, which did not mention breakfast as amenity for Diamonds, nevertheless not the best first impression. The agent was friendly.

A keycards were programmed, and I was on my way to the room. Elevators are at the front of the hotel

The ground floor is a bit cramped as the hotel is not very wide. The bar area is adjacent to the check in are. There are few chairs and tables where you can get drinks and light snacks in the evening. The breakfast restaurant follows. The areas are divided by panels. Breakfast is served starting at 06:30 till 10:30 on weekdays and 07:00 till 11:30 on weekends and holidays

There is also a shop where you can but beverages and snacks.

There is no fitness center.

Check-Out was friendly on the early morning. The invoice was printed as requested and correct.

The parking garage was already full. Parking in the proximity of the hotel is also limited. I was lucky and got a spot on the street, but cars of other guest parking in front of the hotel got a parking ticket in the morning.

Which room did you book, and which upgrade did you receive?
I booked the cheapest room a Standard Room (19 square metres) on a fully flexible rate, and I received this room. The hotel also offers Premium Rooms (22 square metres) but no other room type. It was fine to me not to get an upgrade on this short stay. And to be honest, as this was a sleep-only-stay, I did not really need a larger room.

How are the rooms?

My room was located on the 4th floor far away from the elevator.

The room does follow the typical layout. One is in a quite narrow hallway leading to the room. The hallways is narrow as the open closet it placed there. There were only two hangers in the closet, which also had a mirror and safe.

The bathroom could be accessed from the hallway. It consists of shower, sink and toilet. Storage space next to the sink was okay. Hairdryer was available on a hook in the bathroom. Mirror was not heated, but the bathroom had a heated floor, though I did forget to turn it on in the evening. No bathrobe and slippers. Some hooks in the bathroom were available to hang utensils.

There was no shower door, but this time it was large to avoid water running on the floor. Water pressure was okay, though the temperature changed slightly. Only bath foam / shampoo was provided as wall mounted bottles, lotion was missing. As a general note, this shampoo / shower gel is in my opinion very cheap and smells not very good.

The bed was to the left-hand side of the room. The bed were again two single beds moved together, so no king / queen bed with a single mattress. Two bedside tables with wall mounted reading lamps. USB Plugs (USB A) were at both sides of the bed as part of the regular socket. Lights could be switched on / off from the bed.

Opposite the bed was the large TV and the mobile device could be connected via Bluetooth to the screen. There was a small desk next to the tv with a shelf. Not really a good place, if you need to do some real work. Two power outlets at the desks were available, which was nice.

No iron and ironing board and also no phone, no minibar or fridge and no kettle.

The hotel is not that old, but the rooms show a little bit of wear. The design is modern but, in this case, uninspired. Quality of furniture is good, though the arrangement in the small room was not the best. Everything appeared cramped and to use customized furniture to make better use of the space would have been better.

The fully flexible rate was 80 EUR / night. This was booked before the cyber sale and as the hotel was available. It was sold out before the day I booked and also later. All other hotels were above 100 EUR at time of booking.

How is the exec. lounge?
N/A

What was good and what was bad?
Good
Good connection to public transport
Staff is friendly and helpful
Water Pressure

Neutral
No kettle
No lotion in bath
agent did not mention breakfast as amenity
Parking situation around the hotel
uninspired design

Bad
no real desk and desk chair
cramped breakfast area and public spaces are small

Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
The location is good, and staff is friendly. The room rates offer usually a very good value for money (often to be found below 60 EUR).

Rooms are okay. Design is okay, though the room are small and do not have amenities like kettle, phone or ironing board. The missing real desk could be an issue for some business-travellers. It was the less inspired design on all Niu hotels I stayed so far.

I will return, as it offers a good value for money and if you only need a room for the night or arrive later, spend the evening elsewhere and leave the next morning and do not need the amenities, then this is a good option. It is not very central, but if you do not mind a 25 minutes subway ride (subway runs till 01:00 am) this is not a bad place to discover Düsseldorf and safe money.

My person caveat is that breakfast is only available at 06:30.

As my stays in Düsseldorf are usually heavy workload stays with an early start and late finish, my preferences are slightly different than on business trips. In so far I will chose this hotel for longer stay (unlike the one in Frankfurt) if the options more centrally located are more expensive and / or I do need to built-up nights
