I didn't manage to pull up a ticket to Edinburgh that routed through LGW, but I did manage to get a National Express bus connection through LGW heading to Brighton.

Playing around with various destinations, finding the arrival time of the train, and working backwards, it looks like if you are offered a National Express bus service, or have a train departing Paddington (say, for Cardiff), they'll build a full itinerary that obeys MCTs on the Heathrow Express and then your Great Western train. If you aren't leaving from Paddington, you'd have to get there via TfL service and AC has decided to build the connections with 2 hours at LHR, then 90min to get to the "London Terminal" from which your train departs (King's Cross, Euston, etc)

I'd be curious what the fare rules are on the train tickets if anyone books a ticket.
