Only drawback is that it is only upgradable from check in. That is 48 hours before the FIRST flight. Upgrades should be visible on MMB, but calling EK can do no harm and they are known to sometimes see availability you can’t see. No guarantee given though!
AFAIK it makes no difference how you paid for the ticket, AMEX or other card.

On minor misuderstanding - that paying with AMEX should make no difference I'm fully aware of. What I was refering to was booking with Amex Travel - basically a travel agent with acess to some special rates through its International Airline partners program.
