Don't bother scanning your boarding pass or using the kiosks - it won't work.
Tell them you have United status and show them your MP card (in the app). They don't need the number, they just need to know your status level. Saying 'Premier 1K' or similar while they are looking will help.
When they tell you to,scan your boarding pass and you're in!

Seat selection on non-VA tickets seems variable. I've got a SQ flight next week with 2 VA segments. After getting the VA confirmation number from SQ I was able to pull up the reservation both on their website and app, but I wasn't able to select seats. The staff at the VA lounge (on an earlier trip) were able to assign seats for me, and even gave me free Economy X - although that was possibly in pity for the fact that one of my flights that day had been canceled so I'm not sure I'd be expecting that in general. I'm guessing calling in probably would have also worked (for standard Y seats)
