While I may have the capability to pay for F/J on longer trips on the network carriers, I refuse to pay $6000 for something I can get for $2000 that's functionally almost the same thing. People can argue if my argument is valid all they want, but to me it is. And I meet plenty of people in Norse Premium as an example that feel the same way. I can get a wonderful seat on La Campagnie to Paris from EWR for $2500, where UA in Business is $6000.
This is how I approach international travel now. I just want the "bestest for the cheapest", so I fly on off-brand carriers on occasion (e.g. ZIPAIR from LAX-NRT) and have been satisfied with the product, but I've also found bargains on the majors e.g. DL1 rt, ATL-HND for just over 5K. Domestically, I've even flown Spirit in the "Big Front Seat" and have been satisfied, especially since I'm paying only less than half of what the majors charge.
