I can't speak to these bags, but my GF borrowed my Baseline bag for a trip to europe and left it expanded the whole time and it was fine. I'm not sure I'd recommend that. Was never checked though.

Hard sided v. soft sided is basically a religious debate, but you can pry my soft bags from my cold, dead hands.
