to both alserire and irishguy28 … sorry I wasn’t clear that our ultimate destination is in the UK, but a little bit of thinking before responding is still in order; this thread is in the EI forum, and is titled “Self connecting to EI in Dublin” which means I’m not talking about changing airlines at Schipohl


since we have two days in Belfast at the end of the trip, it was ~$2000 less to fly US-AMS-DUB and back on KL, with separate bookings to/from UK

we experienced weather-related chaos/cancel/rebook at AMS in July 2023; didn’t need to rely on travel insurance to make us whole as Marriott let me change our planned overnight points booking (FRA to AMS)
