That is still boarding with a passport. And the airline would have a record of it which is transmitted to CBP.

Maybe I read too much into the OP’s use of the word “catering” - assuming the other party in the discussion was implying there is a whole line dedicated for folks trying to get in illegally/without passport. Which of course there is not.
