Not a layover but I've been to HND in the morning (~10am) to drop off the checked bags for a 9pm ANA flight, then shoved my carry on duffel into a coin locker just behind the T3 escalators (which lead up to the shopping area) so they definitely let you check bags all day
This was really useful when your have to check out of your hotel at 10am but your have an evening flight later that day.
My own experience was at Narita but they will let you check your bags in at any time for a flight that day, so even if OP has to collect bags at immigration, just check them right back in landside.
