They aren't going to add a leg to an existing itinerary.. You need to change your ticket -- best I can say is to try this on the "change flights" button on your itinerary and see what happens. The agents will almost certainly not give you anything that the "change flghts" button does not for an award itinerary. I do see existing availabilty (at 400k miles(!) per person) on that day, so you may be in luck. And results/luck may be different if you are in the middle of an itinerary vs. traveling on your first leg.
Otherwise, I see a very inexpensive AA flight (miles or $$). Take it. Spend some time in the Polaris lounge. Or better yet (for me, anyhow since I love NYC), fly in the day before and enjoy manhattan for a day.
lol @ 400k miles per person to change the ticket. I got this one for 88k miles saver award rate per person since our original award ticket via Egyptair got cancelled and UA supervisor was kind enough to rebook us on their metal and also change the existing YYZ-EWR-India route to EWR-India by dropping off the first leg of the itinerary since we relocated from YYZ, Canada to DFW, US this year after the booking was made. So reticketing using the change itinerary option is definitely not an option.
Guess we might just fly AA from DFW-EWR a night before and spend some points at the Hyatt House at 1, Exchange Place where we stayed before. Will get 3 free checked bags with that using the AA card.
