We have 6 checked bags so if we book separate flights, it’s going to be $200+ for bags alone. Is there any trick around that?
I don’t have a United credit card but I have the AAdvantage Red Aviator card that gives free bags but the AA flight is too early in the morning and I don’t want to spend 6+ hours waiting at EWR.
The trick is to *not* book separate flights. Surely the $$/mileage DFW to EWR is not usurious on a new ticket...
They aren't going to add a leg to an existing itinerary.. You need to change your ticket -- best I can say is to try this on the "change flights" button on your itinerary and see what happens. The agents will almost certainly not give you anything that the "change flghts" button does not for an award itinerary. I do see existing availabilty (at 400k miles(!) per person) on that day, so you may be in luck. And results/luck may be different if you are in the middle of an itinerary vs. traveling on your first leg.
Otherwise, I see a very inexpensive AA flight (miles or $$). Take it. Spend some time in the Polaris lounge. Or better yet (for me, anyhow since I love NYC), fly in the day before and enjoy manhattan for a day.
