If you do go consider doing the Bamboo Forest Hike (can't remember the Hawaiian name). Leaves going uphill from the Seven Sacred Pools. We caught it on a misty day and it was memorable.
It's the Pipiwai trail in Haleakala National Park. Agree it is a fantastic hike.
