As with many fare search websites, DL shows the lowest total "possible" amount when performing a roundtrip search. You don't know the possible return options until you have selected an outbound flight. The people who were initially looking at the behavior didn't understand this fact and thought DL was charging different fares for the same outbound flights. This was incorrect and it was actually quoting the exact same fares on the outbound flights and the lower "total" price was due to including some broken fare connecting return flight options that were not being included when logged into your account. If you selected the exact same flights in both directions, you would get the exact same fares.
