I think the best option for cost and flexibility is to take the #397 bus from Schiphol half an hour direct to Museumsplein - - runs every SIX minutes. Easy and cheap. In the area around Museumsplein (absolutely smack central Amsterdam) there are a wide variety of hotels with very good rates. Best of all worlds.
There's both a Hilton and Sheraton connected directly to the terminal. There's also a CitizenM that requires a brief walk. Sheraton is the closest, IME costs the most, and has issues witj checkin everytime. Hilton is a bit further walk down the corridor, but usually cheaper IME and ive never had a wait. Plus i like their buffet better and they have a nice EL.
Never been to CitizenM, cant tell you about them. However I've heard great things.
I normally get up about 4am and go for a walk from Sheraton/ Hilton, drop bags at KLM SKYPRIORITY counter (can do after 4am for any KL handled flight (including DL) that same day), walk back and go to sleep again till whatever need to head to security for flight.
