Missing one key thing here - I fly EWR-SFO and back at least 20 times a year. At least 50%, if not more, of the time there is a mechanical issue with the 757 causing a meaningful delay. Never had that issue with a 787 or 777 in the recent past and I now try as hard as possible to avoid 757s all together.
This 50% “statistic” should not be extrapolated to a wider sample or used to inform anyone’s decision making. If you look at the universe of UA’s 757 flights, you will not find anywhere close to half of them being “meaningfully” delayed. Is their reliability worse than the UA fleet average? Yes, for sure. If that matters to you, by all means book away from the 757, but to expect a 50% probability of a “meaningful” delay on any UA 757 flight is unwarranted.
