If by "pharma" you mean prescription sleeping pills like Ambien CR (for which I have a prescription for this purpose) I wouldn't advise them for any flight shorter than eight hours. I've found that a coast-to-coast red-eye (let alone a shorter flight such as PHX to the east coast) isn't long enough for the fog to clear by the time you land. I don't even use them on TATL flights out of Boston unless I'm going non-stop at least as far as, say, Rome. London, Paris, Madrid and so on are just too close. They're great for longer trips, though For me that's southern South America (BA a year ago), trans-Pacific (NRT earlier this year), non-stops to the Middle East (none of those recently or planned), and so on.
