I agree with lost_in_translation Athens has a lot of gems to be discovered and if someone can afford some time and get the right tips, will definitely experience a more than pleasant stay. The city changed dramatically over the last decade for the better with extensive development at the sea front (look the Ellinikon project at the old Athens Int.Airport location)
Transportation gets better (it can be nightmare sometimes) and by the end of 2025 Athens will have one of the newest bus fleets in Europe.
