I think for upgrade offers Delta will 100% do this. They'll know a frequent fliers travel habits and past purchases and will target upgrade offers based on purchase history. (similar to how Amazon uses dynamic pricing)
But we are a family of 5 all with our own DL Amexes and SM accounts. We mix and match taking points from one account for a different passenger all the time depending on who has a high enough mileage balance at the time of booking. How will DL effectively manage all of this given that a SM member can book a flight for anyone else.
