I'm not quite sure how to approach this blog entry as I stayed at 4 different properties during a recently long stay in Munich. 2xHGI and 2xHampton. Maybe I'll review one or two then post again later.
Hilton Garden Inn Munich Messe (Feldkirchen)
There are 2 HGIs in Munich and this review is of the property further out in the Messe area. I want to summarise my review by saying upfront that this HGI does not put a foot wrong. It delivers exactly on the brand standard plus a bit. I travel by public transport and the reviews on TA mostly relate to travel by car. Indeed there is a huge multistorey parking lot next door. But I am adventurous and essentially that means either suburban train + bus, or suburban train + walk. The nearest station is Feldkirchen and from there the 230 bus goes to a stop right outside the Ibis hotel which is 2 doors down from the HGI. The X203 or the 230 go the opposite direction to Haar station which is also on the S-Bahn. On a few occasions when it was daylight I walked from the station and it takes about 40 minutes. The area round the hotel is surrounded by a triangle of pretty busy roads and with the window of the room open it can be a bit noisy with traffic. But the windows are amply glazed. Opposite the hotel the other side of the road is a huge agricultural farm (gives a sense that this property is really outside Munich itself).
The hotel is a new build, stand alone property, round an L shape. Not especially big property, total rooms wise, but the individual rooms are large by city standards. It was really noticable how much bigger the rooms are here than at the relatively nearby Hampton for instance. My room had a sofa bed as well. The room had a kind of Scandinavian feel to it (somewhat reminded me of an SAS lounge), light wood colours. Huge TV, a lot of storage space, American size king bed, really comfortable. Rainfall shower with incredible pressure - awesome. Usual large bottle Crabtree products. I was offered 2 large glass bottles of still or sparkling water at check in. There is a big gym, but it is underground, as is a very modern laundry room equipped with 2 washers and 2 dryers which are free to use.
Breakfast was really good. I noticed that the staff were constantly cleaning - the floor, around the food, the hot plate, the effect was that the food was presented really well even though breakfast had been going a while. Breakfast was really busy at opening, a lot of contractors staying there. As an HGI, there is an egg station, usual excellent omelet. The hot plate also had scrambled and boiled eggs, usual hot items plus grilled vegetables. The fruit salad was absolutely delicious, fruit tasted great. Also in the cold section, birchermuesli, yoghurts plain and fruit, a lot of different cold cuts, a couple of cheeses, severla cereals with various seed toppings, full size croissants, pretzels, a lot of different bread and rolls. Eilles tea (a very good selection) and decent coffee machine.
The journey into central Munich takes about an hour and both trains and connecting buses run late in the evening but ultimately that's the trade off with this hotel. It isn't really IN Munich - but the rates are commensurately much lower. For instance the fully flex rate at the Hilton Munich City was around 225 Euros, at this property it was sub-90 Euros. I did consider a points redemption initially because the points rate was low too but the cash rate dropped so that the rate would have been only around 0.55 c/p so I paid cash. I can absolutley recommend this property with the caveat about location and would definitely stay here again. I'll review the other HGI later. Really if choosing between them it would come down to a tradeoff between location and price
