Even if you are not interested in buying insurance it can be informative to price coverage to place a value on the benefits
The terms are so different that I do question if that's a fair comparison to determine monetary value of the policies. The AIG terms offered through the cards cover delays due to weather, mechanical failure, skyjacking, or lost/stolen travel documents.
The language in the Amex Assurance policy that you can buy has language that includes missed connections, flights being cancelled/delayed for
any reason, and you being denied boarding due to overbooking.
- The Covered Person’s confirmed onward connecting Scheduled Airline flight for a Covered Trip being missed at the transfer point due to the late arrival of the Covered Person’s incoming confirmed connecting Scheduled Airline flight;
- The departure of a Covered Person’s confirmed Scheduled Airline flight for a Covered Trip from any airport being delayed or cancelled; or
- The Covered Person being denied Boarding of the aircraft due to overbooking.
For every section of the paid policies I looked at the dollar amounts are actually a bit lower than the card included coverage, but the covered hazard language would include substantially more scenarios.
