As noted, see my experience. We were transporting a framed piece of artwork or picture in a box I did have an agent pull out the tape measure and tell us we would have to pay the oversized bag fee because the box exceeded the dimensions. We ended up taking the box back to the car and leaving it in the car during our trip.
