I usually do not have an issue with NZ seats- just log in their site with their PNR. Otherwise I just call or use chat.

Just to clarify,
On the KLM website, I can select seats for the KLM flight but not for the NZAir flight.
When I go to NZ website and enter the NZAir reference the message reads "
You will be assigned a seat for this flight free of charge at check-in."
