I don't think the experience is poor as such, but it's very inconsistent these days and very dependent on the crew and ISM that you get on the day.
The hard product is actually decent, but seeing them having to hand deliver each tray from the galley especially on those sub-2 hour regional segments is painful and so I can empathise with why they may look like they are under the pump. Consequently, the little touches from the past that we appreciate (such as them asking if we'd like another drink) goes out the window.
