It is AKL not AUK (very different place)

If it is one and ticket and the transit isn't overnight it should be checked through. That is more a KLM as they are doing the checking in.

What message are you getting when trying to select a seat? Given have a KLM booking reference assuming it is a KLM ticket? AirNZ website is crap for codeshares (doubly so when not *A). Might need to ring KLM (if they issued ticketed).

Not sure why Bulgaria Air status will help here.
