I'm not sure why this would make you feel awkward, or ruin the flight for you.
It's possible that the chap in 4C, seeing where the curtain was, thought he'd been upgraded, and that moving to an empty row in what appeared to be the same cabin was no biggie.
Otherwise... well, if the cabin crew is so disorganised that they don't know where the CE cabin ends and the ET begins, then good luck to anyone who takes advantage of that.
