I was screwed over by AC in a not dissimilar manner when I flew to Hong Kong awhile back. Their response to me was "claim on your travel insurance."
The problem isn't with a particular airline, it's with federal regulations which are more wildly in favour of big business over the consumer, than in virtually any other industry.
