Less than 24 hours the default is through check I beleive.
You can ask to have the bags released if needed (either at the time of checkin or even after arrival at LHR) but that is the exception.
>24 hours and you will always need to pick them up.
In any event you will be able to (and probably should) confirm at checkin at NCL.
