Will I be allowed to select seats at check-in window? Or even before? Does *G status allow that privilege?

Or if not, are they at all flexible at the airport about giving seats even if basic economy has assigned something undesirable?
If the flight is relatively empty, do FAs mind switching seats in the same cabin?
