Sorry to hear about your news.
I had a family crisis myself last week and had to cancel a holiday return home immediately. I called BA and explained the situation and got a bit of a mixed response. The first agent I spoke to didn't want to know and suggested I speak to my travel insurance company. That's not a very good way to treat somebody who has just found out their wife has a terminally ill parent. Just as I was about to have a polite word in her ear, my mobile cut off - good job really. So, I phoned again and got a different agent who could not have been more sensitive, sympathetic and helpful. She was a real credit to BA.
So, my advice is give customer service a call, be nice, and don't give up if they say no.
