variation on question

I will be flying in to JFK this Saturday and returning on Monday morning. Staying at a hotel near Times Square. I have never flown JFK. My wife and I will each be carrying carryons and one additional (me laptop, her large purse).

How easily are the AirTrain/Subway options negotiated with that kind of luggage? Particularly since our return flight Monday leaves at 8:55am. Saturday's arrival is late afternoon.

Is this a good idea or would I be better off taking a cab? I don't want to pay anymore than I have to but by the same token I don't want a lot of hassle on what is mostly a pleasure trip.

I have heard that taxis from JFK to or from Manhattan can be problematic. Is that true?

Any thoughts on approximate cost for the taxi?

Time to allow to and from in a taxi?

All opinions greatly welcomed.
