If I change it and commit to the earlier time, I’m not sure I’d actually make it. And I’m assuming that by me missing the first flight, that would be my problem. By leaving it, it’s BA’s problem (money wise). Maybe I’m wrong.

If it's a booking with BA Holidays you better call at some point. If it's a direct booking on BA.com then if you leave it a week or so it will probably update with a disruption menu for you to choose a suitable option. You now have a flexible ticket, but that changes when you make a decision and it becomes inflexible at that point.
It’s a direct reward flight booking. So it sounds like I’m best to leave it until around a week or so
