There is an exit across from E3 left of the F-> E walkway (when exiting walkway). Were you referring to this one or the exit at E5 (leading to Premier check-in/Door 1)?

For the E3 exit, turn left out of the walkway and the escalator is on the right before Peet's. There is (was) a small sign pointing to baggage claim and a signpost above eye level with the same directions.

You end up at baggage claim 6, turn right and go back up the escalator or elevator on land side to economy check in area, door 7. Or continue up to top floor for AirTrain.

Slightly shorter walk but up and down escalators. If you have to go to baggage claim this is simpler than E5.
