your platinum status upgrade is based off hotel's discretion and usually are processed during check-in.
NUA(SNA) is a separate path of upgrade that is handled by Bonvoy and will be processed within 3 days of check-in.
so think of it as a way to get a 'confirmed' upgrade for your stay.
Also, there are cases where NUA(SNA) is rejected but you still get upgraded during check-in. YMMV
