Not disputing airlines were fighting for survival in Covid - in fact I don't think anyone has said on the contrary? - but how did getting rid of their 747's help? They weren't flying at the time due to the reduced demand, they were fully owned by BA, so the 'ongoing cost' - fighting for survival as you put it - was surely minimal by keeping them in storage (which they did do anyway for about 15 months until they were sold).

Isn't the real reason BA scrapped their 747's due to the imminent retirement?
