un poquito of Spanish and decidedly is NOT an experienced traveler in the region (some time in the Riviera Maya and Cabo, but not a ton) to blithely go places without some eye for risk, which is why I changed plans from Zihuatanejo to PV. I'll see how I like Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City- I rather liked Costa Rica earlier this year.
I know this is an ancient thread, but I was reviewing what current FT think is about PV since I speculatively booked a winter trip with my AS 50% off coupon recently.
If you want to explore more non-big-resort type destinations on the west coast, maybe take a look at Loreto (LTO) in Baja California Sur. A lovely small town with less than a handful of flights in and out on most days, but conveniently a long-time AS destination. Very safe, great food, whales in Feb/March, …. Also some interesting historic sites.
