They didn't actually charge the rental. They simply took an authorization hold for the rental amount plus the deposit (i.e. pending vs. posted charge). If you didn't pick up the rental, the authorization hold would fall off automatically after a few days and the charge would not appear on your final credit card statement that month at all.
