Its been a while since I travelled regularly to the US with EI (pre covid) but I certainly benefitted from a few operational upgrades during that time. These were generally on busy flights where my economy ticket was pretty expensive.
In my experience, J is mostly full these days. So the opportunities for an oversold Economy pushing you up into Business have become very rare.
