It doesn't much matter what you do: you're extremely unlikely to clear SFO-IAD as a Silver and Silver companion, particularly on a flight operated by a 787. That said, as a Silver, you do not have access to the PN inventory that a 1K on a B fare would have, so there is no penalty for applying PlusPoints. I don't know for certain whether your position on the list would be higher, lower, or unchanged with PlusPoints; I suspect 'unchanged,' though.

What I'd recommend is keeping an eye on flight inventory. If you see PZ2 or higher, ask your daughter to cancel the PlusPoints, then go into your reservation; if you see an "Instant Upgrade" button, click it and see what happens -- but there have been numerous reports that this button won't appear for non-1K / won't always appear in general. If you don't see the button, ask your daughter to real the PlusPoints and they'd clear immediately, bypassing the rest of the waitlist.

Good luck!
Thank you! Would I have better luck clearing an upgrade if change to a true premium economy on a non-CPU eligible flight (SFO-EWR)? We are flying the reverse EWR-SFO in premium economy (with my daughter's 1K plus points ) and wondering if should just do the same reverse flight back to the east coast as I understand premium economy is next in line for upgrades after GS requests. She mentioned less plus points are required when applying to a premium economy fare and there seems to be more business class seats available on these premium transcontinental aircraft that we are looking at.

Does applying plus points hurt upgrade waitlist standing in this situation or can "help" in the case of a tie with others in premium economy?
Thanks!
