I don’t rent from the Hertz dumpster fire much anymore (basically only when I can burn points or the rate is so massively better than any of the other majors that I am willing to take the risk), but yeah, after several experiences of not getting the rental contract via email or the receipt at the end I will request “the papers, please” at the gate.

Makes sense to apply this to all rentals no matter what rental company.
