Single aisle long haul isn't new. The 707 was a single aisle plane (albeit with 4 instead of 2 engines).
What's somewhat new is 1x1 seating. AA flew single aisle 757's across the Atlantic for a while before COVID. UA and DL fly 757's (and UA will also get 321XLRs) with 2x2 lie flat seating up front and no Premium Econ section, so AA has definitely raised the bar with the offerings on this plane. Not to mention they'll have the best transcon premium service also.
I flew an Aer Lingus A321LR from DUB to PHL recently and the front cabin had a staggered 2x2, 1x1, 2x2, 1x1 layout. Being in a single "throne" seat was pretty cool.
