Have heard of this 30 day grace period but have never attempted to make use of it. Unpublished rules are subject to change at any time.
Basic question why risk it? How many new or undertrained agents will you encounter?

Could be but Is 12 months vs 13 months making a meaningful difference?

As I told Frieda, (a) and (b) appear to accomplish the exact same thing, but perhaps there's an advantage one option has over the other, of which I'm not aware?
If nothing changes, should get the same result.
Infrequently change flight can be wonky, but then you can cancel and get a FFC.
Occasionally FFCs can be wonky also but phone agents can address.
In either case the credit is locked to an individual.
Really comes down which you are more comfortable with.
