WestJet pricing and yield: they can’t be serious

A one-way flight from YVR to YYC on Nov 30.

One flight that day is selling economy at almost $1100 per person. Onr thousand one hundred freaking dollars. And every other WestJet flight that day ranges from $110 to $400 per person.

Clearly nobody would ever buy that one flight at such a ridiculous, unjustifiable price. Ever. And every other flight throughout the day is cheap (or cheap-ish).

So why would WestJet’s system or process slap such a massive pricetag on this one flight?! Even if there’s only a handful of seats remaining, they set the price at a level that it has zero chance of selling.

I don’t get it. And I’ve seen similar nonsensical, “nobody will ever buy that no matter what” prices pop up on a few routes. Like, not high fares where they’re trying to maximize revenue. But laughable fares that have zero chance of selling.

Why?!
