My suspicion is that TK sometimes targets you specifically for cash upgrades even if no tickets in business are available for purchase in the booking tools if it predicts that you will likely be upgraded on that flight. Like tricking you into paying what you would get anyways with operational upgrade. I know it seems like a conspiracy theory, but I see weird things in relation to my booking. Let me get back in a few days. But in the past I noticed that TK also offers Business upgrades for cash when the flight is not that profitable (not a lot of Business sold and Economy just above 1/2 full). But it is my hunch for now.
I had the same suspicion in my recent trip with 2 other pax in the same booking. There were only mileage upgrade option until the last month. Then, mileage upgrade option disappeared. Suddenly, two days before the flight, cash upgrade option appeared when there was two seat availability in business. I thought it was an error but I was actually able to proceed until the last step but opted not to use it. One day before the flight, the cash offer disappeared. At the end, we did not get an operational upgrade and later I found out that only one other passenger (with a lower status than us) was upgraded due to overbook. Probably, we did not get the upgrade as we were three of us in the same PNR. However, it is still unclear to me how we received cash upgrade option for three pax if the business did not have three seats.
